The Springboard for Recovery – MACH 2010 |
STAR GB occupied the biggest stand in its history at MACH 2010, right in the middle of Hall 5. The centrepiece was the company’s new ST-38 sliding-head mill-turn centre, with up to 60 cutters in the working area. It made its world premiere at the show, extending the maximum capacity of bar that can be processed from 32 mm to a nominal 38 mm diameter. Four orders were taken over the five days, valued at more than £400,000. Managing director Bob Hunt commented, “This was a pleasing result, on top of which a lot of positive enquiries gave us a platform to increase sales further during August and September.” |
Summer Sales Success Order intake since MACH 2010 up to the end of September ran well into double figures at STAR GB, despite the strength of the Yen against Sterling. There seems to be a trend at the moment for manufacturers to invest in 16 and 20 mm sliding-head machines, rather than 32 mm models. The automotive, aerospace and power generation sectors are particularly buoyant. However, Bob Hunt offers a word of caution about deliveries, which are currently stretched to the point of unacceptability. Most machine tool manufacturers, as well as the supply chain retrenched during the recession. It will take a while for production levels and deliveries to return to normal. |
