Washington-based Springwell
Precision Engineering was given the gong at the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Business Awards, which was held at Sunderland Football Club's Stadium of Light - itself a winner of several gongs on the evening.
Commenting on the manufacturing firm, judges said: "This is a business that has been hit by the downturn but has gone back to basics, concentrating on its core products and strengths to help it weather the storm."
They added that while certain tough decisions have had to be taken, "the corner has been turned" and Springwell
Precision Engineering is now strongly positioned to climb out of the current economic downturn with greater strength and efficiency.
Springwell was created in 1996 by a number of experts from the industry and relies on good road, air and rail links to serve customers around the world.
