April offer a success

Star Laptop Deal a Real Success Star customers clearly have an eye for a bargain! The offer of a laptop preloaded with Star's Cimco program editor software, plus a tooling credit worth £2,500, was enough to entice a number of new and existing users to place orders during April.

Managing director Bob Hunt said that he was very pleased with the overall result. He was particularly enthused by the strong interest shown by companies that are not currently users of Star multi-axis lathes, either sliding-head machines or the new fixed-headstock models.

He said, 'The promotion not only made April a good month for us in terms of sales, but also looks set to boost the level of business for the remainder of the second quarter.'

Manufacturing continues to prosper

He also commented that it remains something of a mystery why SMEs in the sectors of manufacturing that Star serves are continuing to do so well against a background of slow overall economic growth and in the light of some reports that UK manufacturing as a whole is slowing.

A positive forecast from the CBI towards the end of April will have helped. So too will the historically low bank base rate and the ongoing strengthening of the Chinese Yuan.

However, the softening of Sterling by 10 per cent against the Euro since early January is probably the prime reason for the continuing buoyancy in manufacturing. It gives us a tremendous competitive edge when selling our goods into Europe – our biggest export market – and does exactly the opposite for our European competitors!

Hot tip for 2011 and beyond. Look out for extra business in the renewable energy and railway refurbishment sectors – they are busy and investing heavily.
